Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Specialising in all aspects of Hand, Wrist and Elbow surgery. Mr Gangopadhyay was appointed as a substantive consultant in trauma and orthopaedics in South Tyneside Hospital in 2012.
Mr Gangopadhyay specialises in Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgery which constitute the majority of his elective practice. He tailors his treatment modalities to individual patients after a thorough discussion of available options and offers a wide range of treatments ranging from minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to major reconstructions. He also treats a wide range of complex hand and upper limb trauma, taking referrals from other units.
Following his basic surgical training in South Yorkshire, Glasgow and Southampton, he completed his Higher Surgical Training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in Sunderland (2004 to 2005) and subsequently on the Nottingham Specialist Registrar Rotation (2005 to 2011).
He trained in the Upper Limb Units in Nottingham and Derby for 24 months, in addition to training in the Hand Unit in Nottingham. He undertook further sub-specialist training in Hand Surgery at the Pulvertaft Hand Unit in Derby and the Hand and Peripheral Nerve Unit at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia.
Mr Gangopadhyay has obtained an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff. He is a member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and the British Orthopaedic Association. He is a member of the BSSH Research Committee, his research interest include hand and wrist osteoarthritis and upper limb trauma and he is well published in peer reviewed journals in the field.
