COVID-19

Please note that due to the coronavirus we are deferring all appointments for further care. The progression of the virus throughout the region will determine when we can re-start seeing routine patients again. We do hope that we can get the service up and running and soon as possible.

Consultant General Surgeon

Mr Patrick Cullen qualified in medicine in 1979 from Trinity College Dublin.

He gained his surgical fellowship at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Mr Cullen later completed his doctorate in medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He completed his surgical training in Dublin, Durham, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Carlisle and Melbourne, Australia. Mr Cullen is a full time Consultant Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Durham.

He is a consultant in general surgery with an interest in laparoscopic and vascular surgery. He specialises in the local anaesthetic ‘Closure’ treatment of varicose veins as well as keyhole surgery for gallstones and groin hernias. Mr Cullen’s focus on laparoscopic surgeries are:

  • laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • laparoscopic groin hernia repair including inguinal
  • femoral and obturator hernia repair and also laparoscopic repair of Gilmore’s chronic groin strain

He also carries out Thorascopic Sympathectomy for excessive sweating of the hand and armpit and for phobic facial blushing.

Mr Cullen is a member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
