General surgeons complete their higher surgical training and then can choose a sub speciality area such as conditions of the rectum.
General surgery focuses on the abdomen and contained tissue and organs (oesophagus, stomach, large and small intestine, pancreas, etc.) and the thyroid gland. General surgeons may also specialise in surgery on the skin, soft tissue, trauma and hernias.
The general surgery team at Tyneside Surgical Services have subspecialties in upper and lower GI, colorectal surgery, pelvic floor repair and vascular surgery. Examples of some of the procedures performed are:
- Hernia repair – repairing a hernia through laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy – removal of the gall bladder through several small incisions
Our consultants have been chosen for their skill and expertise in a sub specialty area.
