Hand surgery is a subspecialty within plastic surgery where surgeons take further training to be able to treat conditions of the hand.

As there is some overlap in hand surgery between plastic surgery and orthopaedics, specialists in both areas may be able to treat the same conditions.

Common hand conditions that are treated by plastic surgery are carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglions, rheumatoid arthritis, Dupuytren’s contracture and congenital conditions of the hand.

The hand surgery team at Tyneside Surgical Services has a special focus on the excision of ganglions or cysts in the hand. A ganglion or cyst is a benign fluid filled sac that is located along a joint. They tend to appear on the wrist, hand and fingers. While they are generally painless, if they cause discomfort or impair functioning, a ganglion may require surgery to be removed. They can be removed by open surgery or arthroscopic (keyhole surgery). Your consultant will be able to help you decide which is the best course of treatment.
